It’s about them
Dec 19, 2020When I first started in leadership I knew I wanted to have weekly one on one's with my team. I just didn't know what I was meant to say in them.
Here's the trick - they're not about you.
These are for your staff. Let them set the agenda. And yes, if they have personal stuff they need to talk about this week, that's OK. These meetings are a chance to build rapport, strengthen relationships and empower them to grow into their potential.
If they struggle to set an agenda, or you would prefer some sort of framework, here's one I use:
- Where did you shine this week?
- What one action are you committing to this week? (note, this wasn't a task related action, this is a self-improvement related action)
- Are there any blockers I can help you with?
- And, after they have nothing left to say... What feedback do you have for me this week to help me lead you better?
I know some leaders might think this is a waste of time, however this approach creates happy, motivated staff, who are far more productive than cranky miserable ones.
