3 Tips to Move Through Procrastination
Oct 15, 2023I get really frustrated when I'm procrastinating on the things I know I need to get done. We all have them, right?
Right now for me it’s responding to a particular email in my inbox that should have been done two weeks ago. I know, seems so simple right?
I don’t know what it is, but I’m sure there’s something you’re putting off…and maybe you have been for a while. So here’s your sign to get it done.
To make it easy to move through procrastination, here are my best tips:
- Uncover the ‘ickiness’ factor. Let’s face it, if there wasn’t something icky about it, you would have done it already. Is it the fear of not getting it perfect or perhaps the uncertainty around it? Connecting with the ickiness brings clarity and allows you to address that specific challenge which can make the task feel less overwhelming.
- Reconnect with your why. Sometimes, even the small stuff can feel like a hurdle. But remember, every task is part of your journey toward greatness. Why did you start this journey? How does completing this task align with your vision for success and leadership? Reminding yourself of the bigger picture can breathe new life into even the most mundane tasks, making them more meaningful and less daunting.
- Connect tasks with your values. Think about the values that guide you. How does this task align with them? When you see a connection between what you're doing and what truly matters to you, it becomes more than just a task—it becomes a step toward living your values. So if one of my core values is 'growth’ then I can tie that into responding to this email I've been procrastinating on by remembering that every time I do something uncomfortable I grow through the process.
I’ll be applying all 3 of these tips to that email. Which one do you think will help the most with what you’ve been procrastinating on?
